Maybe We’ve Been Measuring Success the Wrong Way
Every year, thousands of people earn their Open Water scuba certification.
That’s great news for the diving community.
But here’s a question that doesn’t get asked nearly often enough:
How many of those newly certified divers are still diving five years later?
The scuba industry has traditionally celebrated one number above all others—how many certification cards are issued.
While that’s certainly worth celebrating, it may not be the best measure of success.
It’s supposed to be the beginning of a lifetime of underwater adventures.
A Certification Card Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
A certification card proves you’ve demonstrated the skills required to dive safely within the limits of your training.
That’s important.
But it doesn’t tell us how confident you feel.
It doesn’t tell us if you’re excited to plan your next dive.
And it certainly doesn’t tell us whether you’ll still be diving a few years from now.
Those things can’t be measured by a plastic card.
They come from experience, confidence, and a genuine love for the underwater world.
The Better Question
Instead of asking:
“How many students did we certify this year?”
Maybe we should be asking:
How many feel comfortable planning dives with friends?
How many continued into Advanced, Rescue, or Specialty training?
How many introduced someone else to scuba diving?
Those are the divers who strengthen our diving community.
Those are the divers who inspire the next generation.
Confidence Creates Lifelong Scuba Divers
Think back to learning any new skill.
Did you keep doing it because someone handed you a certificate?
Or because you felt confident enough to enjoy it?
Scuba diving is no different.
Divers who leave their certification course feeling rushed, overwhelmed, or uncertain are far less likely to continue diving than those who finish excited about their next adventure.
It’s built through patient coaching, repetition, and time spent underwater developing real-world skills.
Why Your First Instructor Matters
They create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions.
They explain not just what to do, but why.
They recognize when someone needs more practice instead of simply moving to the next skill.
Most importantly, they help students leave believing:
“I can do this.”
That feeling is often the difference between someone who dives once every few years and someone who becomes a lifelong scuba diver and spends decades exploring the underwater world.
